Universal search results for Google Australia

Last night I saw the first universal search results whilst using google.com.au. I was searching for a song and one of the results on the front page was an embedded YouTube video of the song.

A reminder that when you put video on your website – make sure you title screen is not black. Put your logo or marketing message in before the video starts – this is what the user will see – a black screen is not very appealing to click on.

Back to the universal search results, I would have expected to see a link to a song file, not a pirated site, but something legit like a 15 second grab. Remind me, who owns YouTube again? Ah, that’s right, Google. And when did universal search come about? About 6 months after the purchase of YouTube. Mmm, I’m sure universal search has been a long time coming, much as the purchase of YouTube.

Let me know about your experience with universal search – do you see YouTube too?

Search and get poor

The New York Post has written an article that has put a smile on my face. They are calling paid search “the worst-spent marketing dollars on the Internet”.

The Post is reporting on the imminent release of ISM’s audit on natural search and how many companies invest in paid search because it’s more tangible than organic search.

You can read the whole article at the Post and then come back to order one of our organic search engine optimisation services.

Is this 2007?

I only ask because I’ve stumbled across another leading Sydney web design agency using a javascript redirect full of spam. I thought that kind of thing was so 2003, in fact I thought it was so 2003 that Google was on to it and subsequent users were chucked out of any decent results.

Afraid it’s not so. Do a search on graphic design sydney, a fairly competitive term wouldn’t you say? Page 2 3 results you see a Sydney Website design firm offering graphic design. So you click on their graphicdesign.htm and you are taken to their home page, via this lovely page full of spam. You only get to see this page for a second, but it’s enough to make you reminisce…

Do you know, they also offer search engine optimisation. I bet they’re really good at it.

Shame on you.

Freestyle Media acquired by Q Ltd

In the second million dollar SEO deal this year, Freestyle Media have been acquired by Q Ltd for $1.36m. Slightly less than the Found Agency, and 100% ownership with a three year contract seems like there’s room for them to be pushed out, or maybe retire? Is it just me or does there seem to be a buying spree across Sydney based Search Engine Optimisation firms?

You can read the ASX press release here:

Congratulations, I think Fred has to be one of the hardest working SEO’s in the business, I don’t know him personally but he always seems to presenting something or writing excellent blog entries.

Linkbait with goodies

Jim Boykin of We Build Pages, has a new link bait competition, which I am pathetic enough to enter in. Actually it is the first time I’ve seen someone give away prizes in exchange for a link. It’s really not a bad idea, and it’s something I can see Coca Cola or Nike doing down the track with MySpace users or the NBSNS (Next-Big-Social-Networking-Site).

So, I believe all I have to do is put a link here… http://www.jimboykin.com/jim-boykin-720/ and we’re done.

Sorry Jim, my blog’s only been alive for a couple of weeks and I still haven’t linked it from my website yet…so PR a big fat zero at the moment…

Crimes against design

I was just reading over at MarketingVOX how the FTC have banned an SEO firm for life. The company, Netvertise, have been banned from promoting or selling franchises or any other business activity. Apparently they’ve been selling their services by making false claims.

So, I went to visit www.mbnetvertise.com/english.htm. Mmm…yes, I see how they were fooling their customers with stunning design, valid code, massive killer portfolio, compelling content – shall I go on? Really, people actually paid $160,000 for these people to make websites for them? You’re ‘aving a laugh…

We are the cheapest .com.au registrars in Australia!

My registrar has just lowered the price of .com.au’s so we’ve passed the savings on making us the cheapest .com.au.

I’ve done my research and googled “cheap Australian domain names” and we’re the cheapest by $1.99, coming in at $36 for two years.

If anyone can find cheaper Australian domain names let me know. I might just consider a price drop…

Keyword traffic estimator with gender and age breakdown

Well, I have to say. Well done Microsoft. I can’t honestly remember the last time I said that.

With their new adCenter comes this super new tool for estimating traffic from keywords, by trend, gender and age. As a former marketeer this gets me really excited. I know they are still pathetically general, but for a quick spy it’s excellent.

Unfortunately it will be using American data so not an accurate reflection of the Australian industry, but it is only a guide.

Also, all of my searches seem to spike in March/April, especially true for people searching for the meaning of life below.

The good, the bad and the ugly

One of the reasons for starting this blog was to highlight good and bad web design and sneaky SEO tactics. I spend maybe 12 hours a day on the internet so I visit a lot of websites. The good, the bad and the ugly.

A few months ago I did some work for Google. It opened my eyes to the stupid things agencies do to trick search engines. Since then I can’t stop checking out “what’s under the hood” so to speak. I always looked at other designers code to see how they did things, what makes their page rank highly and just because I’m nosy. But now I’m a super sleuth.

If you feel like being a sleuth make sure you use the Spam Report on Google.

I haven’t decided if I’ll out them here – I’m not sure how ethical that would be? But thought I’d show you what one large web design agency in Sydney has under their hood if you disable javascript in your browser.

If you view into this you’ll be able to read about how good they are at web design and how they are the number one professional agency in Sydney – really???

These people have used this method of “SEO” on at least one of their clients. Shame, shame, shame on you.

I am pleased to see they no longer take up valuable search engine results.

Have you seen an sneaky SEO cheaters lately?

(the Found Agency don’t count – whilst their inbound links were sneaky, they weren’t actually cheating.)
